‘Twas the night before school,
And all through the class,
Two teachers were stirring
Amongst the mass…
Of papers, and piles, and tables that were still dirty!
There was so little time to make this place purdy pretty.
The crayons were all hoarded nestled in their boxes with care,
Whiteboards and erasers ready to share…
As we stumbled around in our end of summer daze,
We knew we only had hours before the first day of school craze.
Then, just as predicted, as if the clock heard us call.
Out on the hooks, in our once vacant hall…
22 tiny backpacks and students filled with cheer.
Lined up and ready and looking a little bit like deer caught in headlights.
They found their new desks, with water aplenty…
For the summer was mild, but the first day of school was disgustingly muggy.
We read them a story about a raccoon,
who kisses a hand by the light of the moon.
Then, they quickly glued their own kissing hands for parent goodbyes.
And, we stood with a basket of tissues for any tears in their eyes.
As the parents headed out, we might’ve heard a holler…
But, paid no attention because it was time for them to color.
We passed out our Welcome Worksheet *freebie*, which helped them keep busy.
While we dug through backpacks and supplies that were making us dizzy.
They colored the front, and gave the back a go!
Writing capitals and lowercase letters, numbers and words…
No first day attempt was considered absurd.
The rest of the day went rather smooth.
Nobody melted, cried, or got lost…
So, we think we’re back in the groove?
We ended the day feeling tired as ever.
“Oh well, summer is totally overrated”,
said all teachers
NEVER.
So, with a flick of our lights and a ding of our bell,
We just might make it through this back to school spell…
