We shared our Technology Tokens here the other day, and mentioned we were working on a use for all those poker chips in class.
Here’s what we’ve come up with…
Fluency always seems like the elephant in the room with some kids. Yes, they can read or solve math problems…
But, quickly?
Notsomuch.
Many of our students come to us not reading yet. So, it is our job to help them master all their letter sounds, get them reading, and reading faster than they ever have in their short little lives?!?
No pressure!
For some kiddos, its enough to just master the concepts
themselves within a school year, but rushing them to meet a certain
fluency level might cause a lot of pressure or unneeded stress on them and us.
We want to keep the stress level down and the fluency building fun.
The other day, this lil’ guy caught our eye as we were cleaning our toy closet at home.
Remember Perfection?
Loved this game as kids and wanted our own kiddos to feel the rush of a plain ‘ol fashioned game (We know, SOOO Old School)
We noticed the timer is 1 minute.
Um, hello?
Perfection!
Had a bunch of these collecting dust in the toy closet too.
Perfection!
We cut a piece of scrapbook paper to fit the inner tray and taped it in place.
You could also glue, but we have a feeling our own kids at home are going to find a new love for the game now that Mommy “needs” it for school…
Hmpf…Almost Perfection!
Little do they know, this is their new summer game…
Ha! Perfection!
We printed the templates, which we’re sharing with you here and taped them in place.
Of course it needed a basket and matching label…
Just couldn’t help it…
It’s our own Perfectionist Tendencies.

We created ours for our
100 high frequency words and plan to give them some to start and then
add more as the year goes on to keep the game fresh.
The sky’s the limit with these poker chips…you could write math equations or vocabulary words too.
The kids could also play
in groups of 2-4, each with a different color chip (one kid has red,
one blue, etc.) and race at the same time. At the end, they collect
their color chips and record.
Perfection!
We’d love to know if you come up with your own Minute Madness idea. Leave some love below or on our Facebook Page and let us know what you come up with!
